PRESS RELEASE Date: 21st November, 2013
GOS-UNDP-GEF and PUC press conference and site visit to the newly installed PV demo system
The Government of Seychelles is executing a project “Grid Connected Rooftop Photovoltaic Systems” with funding from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project is implemented by the GOS-UNDP-GEF Programme Coordination Unit (PCU) in collaboration with the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) and Seychelles Energy Commission (SEC). The project commenced in November 2012 with a duration of four years.
Representatives of the Government of Seychelles and the PUC announce a press conference and site visit to view the newly installed Photovoltaic (PV) demo-system at the PUC Headquarters, Roche Caiman. This is a major step towards the development of PV systems in Seychelles.
The press conference will be held on Friday 22 November, 2013, at 11 am. It will take place at the PUC Conference Room. The press conference will be led by the Chief Executive Officer of the PUC, Mr Philip Morin, the manager of the GOS-UNDP-GEF PV project, Mr Dominic Rassool, and Mr Tony Pace of Pace Global, responsible for the demo-system installation.
The press conference will be followed with a site visit of the installed demo-system.
The objective of the PV project is to increase the use of PV systems as a sustainable means of generating electricity in Seychelles, so as to reduce the country’s dependency on fossil fuel for energy production. Currently, Seychelles is more than 90% reliant on imported oil for its energy needs, including electricity production.
The demo-system comprises two types of PV systems – based on monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels - which will enable the PUC to collect data and have a comparative analysis of the efficiency of the two types of solar power system. The installation of the solar power system is a first for PUC.
