PRESS RELEASE Date: 26th September, 2013
Stakeholders to meet for validation of the draft NBSAP
A workshop will be held on Tuesday 1st October for stakeholders to validate the new National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP).
Organised by the GOS-UNDP-GEF Programme Coordination Unit (PCU), the workshop will be held at the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) Training Room, from 8.30 – 1600.
The workshop will be launched by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Dr. Rolph Payet. Also in attendance will be members of governmental departments, including the Ministry of Environment and Energy, representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), representatives of NGOs and other institutions.
The workshop will be chaired by international environmental governance and biodiversity specialist Jacques Prescott. Presentations will be made by international climate change specialist Peter Smith, and national environment experts Hervé Barois and Cliff Gonzalves.
The validation of the draft NBSAP follows on from a workshop held in May this year that identified the key priority areas for actions to preserve the biodiversity of Seychelles. This important document updates the earlier NBSAP adopted in 1998.
The preparation of the document has brought together and galvanised the Seychelles conservation community. It builds a national stakeholder consensus on biodiversity status and trends, and identifies national priorities for action. The NBSAP is based on the Seychelles 2020 Sustainable Development Vision and aims to inform the Medium Term National Development Strategy 2013-2017, currently under preparation.
